Naver, Argosdyne and Qualcomm teamed up for 5G drones project in South Korea

Naver Cloud, Naver’s cloud computing arm, announced Monday that it has partnered with U.S. chip giant Qualcomm and local drone developer Argosdyne to build the country’s first drone powered by a 5G wireless network.

As part of the partnership, Naver Cloud will build the 5G network infrastructure for drone services, while Argosdyne will develop drones capable of operating on Qualcomm’s 5G Flight RB5 platform.

The Flight RB5 5G is the world’s first AI and 5G enabled platform to provide better safety and data control for drones.

“The 5G-based cloud service is the ultimate solution that supports communication between devices and the real-time data analysis and processing of autonomous drones,” said Kim Tae-chang, head of Naver Cloud business.

“Naver, as the business operator of the nation’s first Eum 5G network, will create new business opportunities for 5G drones.”

The three companies plan to launch a prototype drone and test the new technology in the second half of this year, aiming for a commercial debut in 2023.
